Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,116) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.

Since the coup, a total of (16,425) people are currently under detention, (4,993) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (103) post-coup death row prisoners as of March 9, 2023. (120) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (41) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (144) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail, and (3,840) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, NLD member Khin Maung Tint was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and lung cancer who was detained at Yamethin Prison in Mandalay Region. On the evening of March 7,  he died while receiving treatment at Yamethin People’s Hospital. He was arrested at Poke Ba Thi Ri Township in Nay Pyi Taw on November 17, 2021, and was sentenced to serve five years in prison under Section 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. Khin Maung Tint was close with Phyo Zeyar Thaw, a former Pyithu Hluttaw Representative.

In addition, on March 6, junta forces arrested NLD member Mar Mar Aye while she was evading arrest at her sister’s house in Hpar Pyin Village in Hpakant Township, Kachin State. Mar Mar Aye is from Taze Township, Sagaing Region. It is currently unknown where she is being detained.
