Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,071) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.

Since the coup, a total of (16,075) people are currently under detention, (4,683) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (103) post-coup death row prisoners as of February 28, 2023. (120) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (41) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (144) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail, and (3,837) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on February 23, at around 3 p.m., a coalition of Division 44, 66, and 77 of the junta forces fired heavy weaponry into Nyaung Pin Gyi Village in Shwegyin Township, Bago Region. As a result, the artillery shells killed Thu Zar Nwel (aka May Ka Doe) and Tue, who were in their homes at the time.

In addition, on February 27, at around 3 p.m., junta forces attacked individuals with a fighter jet in Shwegu Township, Kachin State, despite no battle taking place. At the time of the attack, the individuals were panning for gold on the side of Ayeyarwady River near Nga Pauk Wa Village. A man from Moe Sitt Village and a man from Pauk Kone Village were killed in the attack.
