Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2,989) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.

Since the coup, a total of (15,680) people are currently under detention, (4,179) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (103) post-coup death row prisoners as of February 14, 2023. (120) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (41) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (144) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail, and (3,817) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on February 13, the Yangon Region Botahtaung District Court sentenced Linn Htet Naing (aka Aung Thant Zin Oo, aka James) to serve five additional years in prison under Section 52(b) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. Linn Htet Naing was a leader of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions (ABFSU). He was previously sentenced on December 7, 2022, to serve three years in prison under Penal Code Section 505A.

In addition, on February 9, the Yangon Region North Okkalapa Township military tribunal sentenced Hein Htet (aka Po Po) to life in prison under Penal Code Section 505A and Counter-Terrorism Law Section 50(j). Hein Htet, age 18, was arrested in Mingaladon Township on November 30, 2022. He was a Deputy Chairman of No. 1 North Okkalapa High School Student Union (ABFSU), as well as a member of North Okkalapa Township Student Union (ABFSU).
