Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2,954) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.

Since the coup, a total of (13,845) people are currently under detention, (2,338) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (101) post-coup death row prisoners as of February 7, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (143) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail, and (3,815) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

On February 3 at around 6 p.m., junta forces fired an artillery shell at Tan Shin Village, Palaw Township, Tanintharyi Region. The shell exploded on a house in the village, killing a woman named Than Maw on the spot and injuring a child. They were both in the house at the time.

In addition, on February 1, 2023, the Sagaing Region Indaw Township Court sentenced Yin Yin Thein to serve 18 months in prison with hard labor under Penal Code Section 505A. Yin Yin Thein was a freelance reporter and a secretary at Sagaing Region Journalist Association. She is from Na Bar Village, Indaw Township. She was arrested in November 2021 for allegedly “defaming the State and terrorizing [government] staff” by posting on social media.
