Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2,940) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.
Since the coup, a total of (13,763) people are currently under detention, (2,278) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (101) post-coup death row prisoners as of January 31, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (143) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail, and (3,785) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to information gathered today, on January 30, the Special Court inside Pathein Prison sentenced Dr. Hla Myat Thway, Minister of Social Affairs of the Ayeyarwady Region Government, to two years’ imprisonment under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code. After being under house arrest in government housing in Ayeyarwady Region since February 1, 2021, she was transferred to Pathein Prison on December 30, 2022.
In addition, on January 29, junta forces raided Maubin East Village, Shwebo Township, Sagaing Region, and set houses on fire. The junta also killed two villagers, Myint Thant and Kan Htoo, and burnt their bodies. On the morning of January 30, the locals found their bodies after the junta left the village.
