Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2,901) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.

Since the coup, a total of (13,719) people are currently under detention, (2,216) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (101) post-coup death row prisoners as of January 30, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (143) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail, and (3,781) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on January 9, the Hopong Township Court sentenced U Kyaw Zay Ya to one year’s imprisonment under Section 505A of the Penal Code. U Kyaw Zay Ya was the Editor in Chief of Kanbawza Tai News Agency based in Taunggyi Township, Shan State. He was arrested in Gyobingauk Township, Bago Region, on December 25, 2022, while he was fleeing Taunggyi Township.

In addition, on January 27 at around 8 a.m., without a battle taking place, the junta’s Hopin Town-based Infantry Battalion 40 fired heavy weaponry indiscriminately into Nant Yin Village, Hopin Township, Kachin State. As a result, Mi Kyi and her son Sai Sai were struck by an artillery shell while going to the fields. The artillery shell killed Sai Sai on the spot and injured Mi Kyi, who received treatment at Myitkyina Hospital.
