Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2,894) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.
Since the coup, a total of (13,689) people are currently under detention, (2,174) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (101) post-coup death row prisoners as of January 27, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (143) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail, and (3,779) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to information gathered today, on January 24, a clash broke out between the People’s Defence Force and the junta in Tanintharyi Township, Tanintharyi Region. Afterwards, the junta indiscriminately fired heavy weaponry into nearby villages, killing Thein Khin, age 90, from Ou Yin Kan Village.
In addition, on January 25, more than 100 junta personnel raided Ma Kyi Kone Village, Thabeikkyin Township, Mandalay Region. The junta arrested and killed villager Min Maung. They also arrested Min Maung’s wife, 16-year-old son, and 10-year-old daughter.
