Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2,892) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.

Since the coup, a total of (13,680) people are currently under detention, (2,173) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (101) post-coup death row prisoners as of January 26, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (143) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail, and (3,777) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on January 24 at around 3 p.m., the junta and pro-junta Pyu Saw Htee raided and seized U Zaw Oo’s house in Kyauk Ni Maw Village, Launglon Township, Tanintharyi Region. U Zaw Oo has not lived in that house since the coup. The junta and Pyu Saw Htee also arrested two women. One of the women is a cousin of U Zaw Oo, and the other is Ma Ei Ei Phyo.

In addition, on January 23 in Tamu Township, Sagaing Region, three youth traveling from Kyun Pin Thar Village to Tamu Town were interrogated by the junta in front of a military camp in Koon Taung Village. The junta arrested them, accusing them of contacting the People’s Defence Force, and killed them. Those three youth were Let Ming Thang from Kyun Pin Thar Village, Shwe Ming Thang and Ngam Ming Hau, age 17, both from Myot Ma 14 Section in Chaung Natt Gyi Village. The junta did not return their dead bodies to their families.
