Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2,826) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.

Since the coup, a total of (13,653) people are currently under detention, (2,170) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (101) post-coup death row prisoners as of January 24, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (143) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3,761) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on January 15, junta forces clashed with the Chinland Defense Force (Matupi) when entering Nga Leng Village, Matupi Township, Chin State. Afterwards, the junta forces stationed themselves in the village and arrested two villagers, Van Bate and Lalb Lyan. On January 21, their bodies were discovered.

In addition, NLD lawyer Win Kyaw Soe was arrested at his home on the evening of January 22. He was representing people with political charges in the special court inside Obo Prison. He was living in Kyi Kone Village, Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Region.
