Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2,750) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.

Since the coup, a total of (13,613) people are currently under detention, (2,148) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (100) post-coup death row prisoners as of January 19, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (142) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3,750) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on January 9, the junta’s LIB-364 and IB-701 forces raided and set fire to Chaung Nar Village, Tabayin Township, Sagaing Region. Then, they abducted Thein Tun and Myint Swe, who were locals of the village. On January 11, Thein Tun was found in Chaung Nar Village with serious, torture-inflicted injuries. On January 17, he died from those injuries. Myint Swe, who was arrested with him, was released.

In addition, on January 9 at 11 p.m., Ma Har Thi, age 17, was shot and killed by the 274 Infantry Battalion based in Mindat Township. She was killed at home in Li Laung Village, Mindat Township, Chin State. On January 7, Ma Har Thi’s father had been arrested and taken by the junta to perform forced labor. When her father ran away from the junta on January 9, the junta raided their house and fired shots, killing Ma Har Thi that night.
