Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2,749) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.

Since the coup, a total of (13,607) people are currently under detention, (2,141) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (100) post-coup death row prisoners as of January 18, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (142) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3,750) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on January 16 at around 8 p.m., the junta’s 421 Artillery Battalion based in Pekon Township fired heavy weaponry into Kaung Saung Village, Mobye Town, Pekon Township, Shan State. The weaponry exploded in a shelter of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the village. The explosion killed Mu Lin, an IDP, and injured two men, also IDPs. Mu Lin had fled to Kaung Saung Village because of the war in Done Du Htan Village.

In addition, on January 16 at 9:30 p.m., junta forces raided the house of Township NLD Chairman Win Myint Khaing. His house is located near Hbone Zin Market in Nyaung-U Township, Mandalay Region. During the raid, the junta arrested Win Myint Khaing, his son Khaing Thiha, and two locals living in the house.
