Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2711) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.

Since the coup, a total of (13,321) people are currently under detention, (1937) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (100) post-coup death row prisoners as of January 9, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (142) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3696) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on January 7, at around 1 PM, the junta forces fired heavy weaponry after a clash broke out between junta forces and local PDFs near Hsar Dwin Village, Tigyaing Township in Sagaing Region. The artillery shells exploded inside Htan Kone, Kan Pauk and Lay Thar villages, resulting in the death of a woman on the spot, while three people were injured. The deceased was Kyi Phyu from Htan Kone Village.

In addition, on January 6, Hein Yupa Aung, who had previously been sentenced to life imprisonment, and Paing Soe Moe, Nyi Nyi Tun and Zaw Zaw Moe, who had previously been sentenced to long-term imprisonments, were each sentenced to five years’ imprisonment under Section 51(c) of the Counter-Terrorism Law by the Special Court inside Insein Prison. They were arrested in August 2021 in Sanchaung Township, Yangon Region.
