Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2688) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.   

Since the coup, a total of (13,217) people are currently under detention, (1923) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (97) post-coup death row prisoners as of December 30, 2022. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (139) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3463) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

Naing Ye Wai, a former chairman of Yadanarpon University Students’ Union, was sentenced by Mandalay Region Kyaukse District Court to serve 15 years in prison with hard labor on December 28. He was charged under Section 50 (j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. Naing Ye Wai was arrested in July, 2022.

On December 27, while a junta column of around 60 soldiers was raiding Po Wa Village, Madaya Township, Mandalay Region, two young members of the village defense force; Pyae Pyae Kyaw and Naing Naing, who were scouting the column, were arrested. After the junta column left the village on December 28, the burnt bodies of Pyae Pyae Kyaw and Naing Naing were found. The pair were scouting for the village defense, not involved in combat.
