Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2685) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.   

Since the coup, a total of (13,167) people are currently under detention, (1866) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (97) post-coup death row prisoners as of December 28, 2022. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (139) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3461) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

On December 28, Justice Attorney Ywat Nu Aung was sentenced by the Special Court inside Obo Prison, Mandalay Region, to serve 15 years in prison with hard labor. She was charged with Counter-Terrorism Law Section 50 (j). On April 27, she was arrested while she was coming back from the hearing of Mandalay Region Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung in Obo Prison.

On December 28, at around 6 AM, a junta vehicle column of around 14 vehicles was attacked by a landmine near Nyin Htway Village, Yebyu Township, Dawei District, Tanintharyi Region. The column then arrived on Yebyu-Dawei Road and hit a woman riding a motorcycle. The junta ran over her; killing her on the spot. She was Pan Ei Phyu from Zee Kya Village, Yebyu Township.
