Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2669) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.   

Since the coup, a total of (13,143) people are currently under detention, (1820) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (97) post-coup death row prisoners as of December 27, 2022. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (139) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3453) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on December 23, Kaung Htet Oo, in-charge of the ABSFU Yangon Treasury Bureau, was sentenced by Hpa-An District Court in Kayin State to 15 years in prison. He was sentenced under the Counter-Terrorism Law Section 49 (a). On July 18, 2022, Kaung Htet Oo was arrested by junta soldiers while travelling to Hpa-An Township.

In addition, Nu Nu Aung from Farmers’ Welfare Department, Khet Khet Aung from Women and Child’s Affair Department of 88 Generation Peace and Open Society, and her son named Myat Thu Aung, were sentenced by the special court inside Kyaikmaraw Prison. The three were each sentenced to 10 years in prison for Counter Terrorism Law Section 50 (j), and 5 years sentence for Section 51 (c). Nu Nu Aung, Khet Khet Aung, and Myat Thu Aung were evading junta arrest but Nu Nu Aung had health problems. They were detained on April 26, 2022 while they were going to seek medical treatment for her at Hpa-An Township.
