Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2662) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.   

Since the coup, a total of (13,124) people are currently under detention, (1803) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (97) post-coup death row prisoners as of December 26, 2022. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (139) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3453) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

On December 23, Thiri Yadanar, a central executive member and treasurer of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions (ABFSU), Aung Myo Ko, a chairman of Mandalay District Students’ Union (ABFSU) and Kyaw Zin Latt, a former executive of Mandalay Education College Students’ Union (ABFSU) were each sentenced to twenty two years imprisonment. They were sentenced by the Special Court inside Obo Prison and were sentenced to 15 years imprisonment under Section 50 (j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law and to 7 years imprisonment under Section 52 (a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. They were arrested on March 2, 2022.

On December 22, at around 9 PM, military junta troops from Kyaukhtu Artillery battalion fired heavy artillery into Kyaukhtu Town in Magway Region. One of the explosions in Gon Bo Ward killed a 6-year-old girl who lived in the ward. She died after being hit by a shell in the head.
