Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

According to AAPP documentation, at least (900) houses and buildings have been sealed off by the junta between February 2021 and November 2022. 

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2641) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.   

Since the coup, a total of (13,116) people are currently under detention, (1778) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (97) post-coup death row prisoners as of December 23, 2022. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (139) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3452) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

On December 16, three political prisoners who had been previously sentenced to 29 years, 28 years and 12 years imprisonment respectively, were each sentenced to seven additional years of imprisonment. Currently detained in Dawei Prison, Tanintharyi Region, they were sentenced by Dawei District Court under Section 5 of the Explosive Substances Act. The three political prisoners are Myat Kyaw Thu, Min Sat Muu and Aung Aung. In step with the fresh prison sentences, Myat Kyaw Thu will serve 36 years, Min Sat Muu will serve 35 years and Aung Aung will serve 19 years in prison.

On December 22, a clash broke out between junta forces and a coalition of KNLA and PDF at Tadar Kyoe Village, Kawkareik Township, Kayin State. During the clash, an artillery shell fired by the junta landed in Kawt Nwe Village, injuring Phoe Sanay, a former boxer. He died from blood loss that day, due to being struck in the thigh.
