Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

According to AAPP documentation, at least (900) houses and buildings have been sealed off by the junta between February 2021 and November 2022. 

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2629) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.   

Since the coup, a total of (13,088) people are currently under detention, (1763) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (97) post-coup death row prisoners as of December 20, 2022. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (139) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3452) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data received today, a total of 8 individuals, detained in Pathein prison, Ayeyarwady Region, were each sentenced to 5 years imprisonment. They were sentenced under Counter-Terrrorism Law 52(a) by the Pathein prison special court, on December 15. These 8 people include: Luu Sett Naing (aka Tin Ko Htet),  Ye Linn Htet (aka Thar Pu), Tun Linn Oo, Chit Sann Maung, Zaw Min Tun (aka Maung Zaw), Zin Linn Htike (aka Tut Ni), Tun Aye and Zaw Hlaing Oo (aka Min Min). On September 16, 2021, at midnight, the armed wing of the junta broke down Lu Sit Naing’s door and arrested the poet in his home in Ward 6, Pathein township. It was nearly a year after his arrest when he was finally sentenced. 

At the end of November, Soe Myat Min, former president of the student union of Pyay township, Bago Region, was sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment. He was sentenced under charges of Counter-Terrorism Law 52(a) and 51(c) by the special court in Pyay Prison. On November 15, Soe Myat Min had already been sentenced to 12 years in prison under Penal Code 505 A. On May 3, 2022, Soe Myat Min was arrested at a restaurant in Pyay Township. His wife, Su Wai Phyo, was arrested on May 8 in Letpadan Township. On December 12, Su Wai Phyo was sentenced to 7 years in prison under the Explosive Substances Act section 52(c).
