Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

According to AAPP documentation, at least (900) houses and buildings have been sealed off by the junta between February 2021 and November 2022.  

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2614) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.          

Since the coup, a total of (13,088) people are currently under detention, (1729) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (97) post-coup death row prisoners as of December 19, 2022. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (139) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3451) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, On December 16, Soe Yar Zar Tun, a reporter from Yangon who was re-arrested seven months after his release from prison, was sentenced to four years imprisonment with hard labor. He was sentenced by the Special Court inside Insein Prison, under Section 52 (a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. Soe Yar Zar Tun was arrested in February, 2021, while he was reporting on protests. He was initially charged under Section 505 A of the Penal Code. He was released on June 30, 2021, and was subsequently re-arrested in Thonse Town, Thayarwady District, Bago Region in March 2022.

On December 16, Editor-in-Chief Wai Linn Yu and Editor-in-charge Htet Htet Aung, from Thingangyun Post News, were each sentenced to five years imprisonment. They were sentenced by the Special Court inside Insein Prison, under Section 5 of the Explosive Substances Act. When Wai Linn Yu and Htet Htet Aung were arrested on September 11, 2021, they were allegedly caught with explosives.
