Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

According to AAPP documentation, at least (900) houses and buildings have been sealed off by the junta between February 2021 and November 2022.  

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2589) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.          

Since the coup, a total of (13082) people are currently under detention, (1714) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (97) post-coup death row prisoners as of December 14, 2022. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (139) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3449) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

On December 12, Regional Hluttaw MP for Pyay Township, Kyaw Zaya was sentenced under multiple charges by the court set-up inside Pyay Prison. Kyaw Zaya was sentenced to two years imprisonment under Section 25 of the Natural Disaster Management Law, one year imprisonment under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law and six years imprisonment under (two separate charges of) Section 505 (A) of the Penal Code. Kyaw Zaya was arrested in June 2022 and had previously been sentenced to ten years imprisonment.

On December 2, Sue Sha Shin Thant, a LGBT activist and trans-woman, was sentenced to twenty years imprisonment under Section 50 (j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law and two years imprisonment under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code. She was sentenced by the court set-up inside Obo Prison. Sue Sha Shin Thant was arrested by the armed wing of the junta on October 2, 2021 and had previously been sentenced to three years imprisonment under Section 505 (A) of the Penal Code early this year.
