Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

According to AAPP documentation, at least (900) houses and buildings have been sealed off by the junta between February 2021 and November 2022.  

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2578) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.          

Since the coup, a total of (13076) people are currently under detention, (1712) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (97) post-coup death row prisoners as of December 13, 2022. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (139) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3449) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

On December 9, Sithu Aung Myint, who had been arrested while in Insein Prison, was sentenced to an additional seven years of imprisonment with a fine of 10000 Kyats. The journalist was charged and sentenced under Section 124 (a) of the Penal Code by the Botahtaung District Special Court, inside Insein Prison. Sithu Aung Myint had already been sentenced to five years imprisonment for two charges under Section 505-A of the Penal Code, in a previous trial.

On December 7, Min Paing and Aung Min Oo, locals of Sa Laung Kya Village, Hlaine Bhone Village Tract in Mawlamyinegyun Township, Ayeyarwady Region, were detained by military junta troops for allegedly supporting the PDF.

From December 9 to December 12, 2022 – 224 houses were set on fire and destroyed in Kokko Kone Village, Pay Pin Chaung Village, Nyaung Kone Village, Zee Phyu Kone Village and Shaw Phyu Kone Village, within Kawlin Township, Sagaing Region. Perpetrators of these crimes comprise nearly 60 junta troops from 363 Light Infantry Battalion, stationed in Koe Taung Bot, Kanbalu Township, and a further 70 junta troops from 369 Light Infantry Battalion, stationed in Chat Thin Area. On the evening of December 11, the armed wing of the junta entered and set fire to Pay Pin Chaung Village, where they killed five civilians named Thein Aung, Ae Maung, Naing Win Tun, Kan Min Soe and Myint Soe.
