Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

According to AAPP documentation, at least (900) houses and buildings have been sealed off by the junta between February 2021 and November 2022.  

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2572) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.          

Since the coup, a total of (13074) people are currently under detention, (1704) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (97) post-coup death row prisoners as of December 12, 2022. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (139) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3449) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

At the end of November, Zin Min Htet and Myo Thit Kyaw, two student union members, were each sentenced to ten years imprisonment. Zin Min Htet is a member of Kale University Students’ Union, whereas Myo Thit Kyaw is a member of the University of Computer Studies Student Union. They were sentenced by the court inside Kale Prison, Kale Township, Sagaing Region, under Section 50 (j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. Myo Thit Kyaw was previously arrested at a checkpoint of the Kale Regional Operations Command. Zin Min Htet was arrested by the armed wing of the junta in San Myot Ward, Kale Township on May 15, 2021.

Aye Aye Min and her husband were each sentenced to three years imprisonment. They were sentenced by the court inside Insein Prison, under Section 505-A of the Penal Code on December 9. Before their trial, they had been forcibly detained by the armed wing of the junta in 6 Ward, South Okkalapa Township, Yangon Region on the night of July 4, 2022.
