Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

According to AAPP documentation, at least (900) houses and buildings have been sealed off by the junta between February 2021 and November 2022.  

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2565) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.          

Since the coup, a total of (13068) people are currently under detention, (1697) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (97) post-coup death row prisoners as of December 8, 2022. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (139) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3449) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

Aye Zan, a doctor and chief minister of Mon State, was accused of wielding improper influence in the 2020 general election and re-sentenced to an additional two years of imprisonment. This sentencing occurred on December 6, at the Special Court inside Kyaikmaraw Central Prison. His two added years of imprisonment were based on two charges, under Section 171 (f) of the Penal Code. Aye Zan had already been sentenced to 25 years imprisonment in previous trials.

On December 7, Lin Htet Naing (aka James), a former member of the Executive Committee of All Burma Federation of Student Unions (ABFSU), was sentenced to three years of imprisonment. He was sentenced inside Insein Prison, by Kyauktada Township Special Court, under Section 505 A of the Penal Code. Lin Htet Naing had also previously been charged under Section 50 (j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law in Botahtaung District Court, on November 3.
