Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

According to AAPP documentation, at least (900) houses and buildings have been sealed off by the junta between February 2021 and November 2022.  

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2565) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.          

Since the coup, a total of (13057) people are currently under detention, (1684) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (97) post-coup death row prisoners as of December 6, 2022. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (139) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail and (3448) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

On December 5, Thet Hnin Aung, General Secretary of the Myanmar Infrastructure, Craft and Service Labour Union, was sentenced by the Paung Township Court, Mon State, to serve two years in prison and pay a fine of 20,000 Kyats. He was sentenced on the charge of Unlawful Associations Act Section 17(1). Thet Hnin Aung was arrested in Myawaddy Town, in June of 2021, and was sentenced over a year after his arrest.

On October 10, Hphone Pyae Paing, a member of Basic Education Students’ Union for Shwedaung Town, was sentenced by the Pyay District Court, Bago Region, to serve 10 years in prison. He was sentenced on the charges of Counter-Terrorism Law Section 50(a) and 52(a). Following his sentence, his mother, Swe Swe Win, was arrested at the end of November and was sent to Pyay Prison on December 2.
