Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

According to AAPP documentation, at least (786) houses and buildings have been sealed off by the junta between February 2021 and October 2022.  

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2533) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.          

Since the coup, a total of (12986) people are currently under detention, (1612) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (86) post-coup death row prisoners as of November 24, 2022. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (128) people who have been sentenced to death. (22) people have been released on bail and (3418) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

On November 22, a special court in Insein prison sentenced freelance journalist Thu Zar, a.k.a Ah Hla Lay Thu Zar, to two years in prison with hard labor. Thu Zar was arrested in September 2021 and has been charged under Section 505 A of the Penal Code.

Aye Thiri a.k.a Phue Phue, who lives in Hkamti Township, Sagaing Region, was accused of providing 5,000 kyats (2.30 USD) to the People’s Defence Forces. On November 22, she was sentenced to 10 years in prison, under Counter-terrorism law 50(J). On February 21, Aye Thiri was arrested at her house in Hkamti Township. She had been detained for over 9 months at the Hkamti district police station, before she was sentenced. Aye Thiri is not in good health and often suffered unconsciousness while in detention.
