Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Updated 16 November 2022

According to AAPP documentation, at least (786) houses and buildings have been sealed off by the junta between February 2021 and October 2022.

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (2465) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.

Since the coup, a total of (13015) people are currently under detention, (1648) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (86) post-coup death row prisoners as of November 16, 2022. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (128) people who have been sentenced to death. (22) people have been released on bail and (3195) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

Dagon University Students’ Union executive Wutyi Aung, was arrested on September 14, 2021, and detained in Insein Prison. She was sentenced to serve 3 years in prison, on the charge of Penal Code Section 505 A. She is still facing charges under Counter-Terrorism Law Section 52 (a). Within 3 months of her detainment, she suffered a Transient Ischemic Attack (minor stroke) and sought treatment at a prison hospital. A possible brain tumor was discovered on Wutyi Aung, due to injuries sustained during interrogation. Although her family sent an application for Wutyi Aung to receive a medical checkup, the request was denied. She was transported to Daik-U Prison on April 24, 2022, and on October 24, she was moved back to Insein Prison. Wutyi Aung’s health remains in critical condition, frequently suffering long periods of unconsciousness.

AAPP will continue to inform on verified daily arrests, charges, sentences and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update the lists with details of these alleged offenses.
