Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

According to AAPP documentation, at least (760) houses and buildings have been sealed off by Junta between February 2021 and August 2022.  

Since the February 1, 2021 military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of  (2265) people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians have been killed through military crackdown following pro-democracy movements.             

Since the coup, a total of (12252) people are currently under detention and (1430) are serving sentences. There are a total of 83 post-coup death row prisoners as of September 5, 2022. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (125) who have been sentenced to death. (22) people have been released on bail and (3079) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly. 

On August 31, Kyaw Thiha Soe, a member of the Mandalay Strike Force was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment by the special court inside Obo Prison. Another 3 members of the other Strike Force: Hein Min Zaw, Kyaw Soe Moe and Ja Seng Aung, were also sentenced to 3 years’ imprisonment on September 1; each by the special court in Obo Prison, and with charges under Penal Code Section 505A.

In addition, on September 1, Aung Naing Thu, a member of the Mandalay Education Degree College Students’ Union (All Burma Federation of Student Unions), was sentenced to 3 years’ imprisonment by the special court inside Obo Prison, with charges under Penal Code Section 505A. Aung Naing Thu was arrested during a crackdown on the Mandalay Strike on May 12, 2021.
