Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Updated 19 October 2021

On October 18, the junta announced they would release 1316 people who had been sentenced and 4320 people who were facing trial. As of today, AAPP is able to document (189) people released since yesterday. The exact identities and total figures remain to be verified, but we will continue to verify the recently released.

As of October 19, (1181) people are now confirmed killed by this junta coup. Today there were no confirmed fallen heroes. This is the number verified by AAPP, the actual number of fatalities is likely much higher. We will continue adding as and when.

As of October 19, a total of (7190) people are currently under detention. (317) people have been sentenced in person, of them 26 have been sentenced to death (incl. 2 children). 1954 are evading arrest warrants. 118 people have been sentenced in absentia, of them 39 sentenced to death in absentia. In total 65 sentenced to death, in person and absentia.

Yesterday, 11 people, who were released from Meikhtila Prison in Mandalay Region were re-arrested at the prison gate by police and charged under Counter-Terrorism Law that same day. They are Lwin Maung Maung who is NLD’s Regional Hluttaw MP from Meikhtila Township, Thet Maung Maung, Wai Phyo Aung, Thiha Kyaw, Nay Linn Aung, Tun Aung Kyaw, Aung Kyaw Htet, Zaw Htet Aung, Saw Nanda, Paing Zay Soe and Thasi Township protest leader Lay Lay Naing. Furthermore, on October 18, Ye Myint Aung and Kalar Gyi were arrested on the same day of their release. Indeed similar cases are occurring across the country.

Even though this terrorist junta announced they would release a total 5356 previously sentenced, charged, or people on trial, they are detaining and charging some again that same day. Those who are not released as they are sued with new charges even after the previous charges were dropped. In light of this, the actual number of releases will be certainly less than announced. Though AAPP welcomes the release of these people, we will continue to strive and achieve the unconditional release of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and President U Win Myint and all political prisoners, and bring to justice the perpetrators of these arbitrary detentions and torture.

AAPP will continue to keep you informed of verified daily arrests, charges, sentences and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update our lists to the details of these alleged offences. If you receive any information about detentions of, or charges against CSO leaders, activists, journalists, CDM workers, other civilians and fallen heroes in relation to the military and police crackdown on dissent.
