Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup
Date – 19 June 2026
Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (8,107) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
A total of (31,208) people have been arrested by the junta for opposing their arbitrary seizure of power. Of those arrested, (14,341) are confirmed to still be in detention, while (7,876) remain to be verified.
These are the numbers reported by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
The freedom of expression in Burma continues to be severely violated, daily. The junta is arbitrarily interpreting and weaponizing the law to suppress and control its opponents, pro-democracy activists, the media and civilians. Furthermore, the junta is also committing widespread acts of arrest, imprisonment, intimidation and torture in retaliation to public criticism, peaceful protests and statements made on social media.
On June 18, 2026, Insein Prison Court sentenced author Tin Nyunt, who writes political, fiction and non-fiction literature and his son, Nay Tun, to three years imprisonment each under Section 505 A of the Penal Code. They were arrested at their house in Thanlyin Township, Yangon Region, on April 23.
