According to information gathered by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), there have been (7) individuals who was arrested under political pretenses in May 2026. Moreover, (49) pro-democracy activists and civilians have lost their lives this month. Among them, (3) lost their lives under various circumstances following their arrest.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP and only includes information and data that has been identified. The actual numbers on the ground are likely much higher. AAPP has been working separately to collect and verify the information of around (73) people still under identification, who died within the month.

Instead, the junta continues carrying out aerial attacks against innocent children, women, schools, and religious facilities, while maintaining control over the population through fear and oppression. The data presented in this month’s report clearly underscores this reality.Moreover, the deaths of political prisoners behind bars are part of the junta’s silent method of killing. Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP)⁩

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma), otherwise known as AAPP, is a human rights organization based in Mae Sot, Thailand and Rangoon, Burma. AAPP advocates for the release of all remaining political prisoners in Burma and for the improvement of their quality of life during and after incarceration. AAPP has developed rehabilitation and assistance programs for those political activists who have been released while continuing to document the ongoing imprisonment of political activists in Burma.

As long as political prisoners exist inside Burma, Burma will not be free. They represent the struggle for democracy, human rights, equality and freedom for the people of Burma. This makes the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners an integral part of Burma’s drive for national reconciliation.
