Allowing Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to meet with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at 9:30 a.m. on August 3, 2026, represents a partial victory driven by collective pressure from domestic and international organizations, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. However, the military refuses to recognize Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as a national leader legitimately elected by the people; instead the military’s decision to permit access solely to the ICRC makes it very clear that she remains a prisoner. To resolve Burma’s crisis, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi must be released unconditionally and her rightful leadership role must be officially recognized so she can lead the nation once again.
