January, 2026 Monthly Chronology
3 February 2026
According to information gathered by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), there have been a total of (13) individuals who were arrested under political pretenses in January 2026. Moreover, (87) pro-democracy activists and civilians have lost their lives this month. Among them, (2) lost their lives under various circumstances following their arrest.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP and only includes information and data that has been identified. The actual numbers on the ground are likely much higher. AAPP has been working separately to collect and verify the information of around (82) people still under identification, who died within the month.
During the period of the illegal election in Burma, the junta has been carrying out unprovoked airstrikes, and its military columns have been burning down houses, killing, looting, and raping people daily. The oppression of political prisoners in prisons has become increasingly severe, and other inhumane crimes have also escalated in numbers.
This is the most brutal violence committed against the people, treating them as enemies. If the international community continues to turn a blind eye to these crimes, the junta will continue to commit brutal acts against the people to no end. It has therefore become imperative to take immediate and comprehensive action against these abuses.
