Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 19 January 2026

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (7,695) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

Since the coup, a total of (30,299) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (22,743) are currently in detention, (11,482) of whom are serving sentences.

These are the numbers verified by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

Political prisoners in prisons across the country are deprived of their basic rights, including being denied essential needs such as food and medicine. In Tamu Detention Prison, Sagaing Region, prisoners are not only failing to receive adequate nutritious food but also receiving insufficient medicine. Their families are also being asked to pay money to be allowed to visit them.

In addition, junta forces have been conducting attacks on non-military buildings almost daily. On January 15, junta forces launched an offensive and burned down Kaing Village, Myaing Township, Magway Region, destroying more than 30 houses, a monastery and a school. Junta forces also burned down more than 100 houses in Hnaw Pin Village in the same township over two consecutive days starting from the evening of January 15. An elderly woman died in the fire. Similarly, on the same day, an airstrike was carried out on a monastery near Shan Myaung Village, Kani Township, Sagaing Region, despite no clashes occurring. Some monks were injured and monastery buildings were damaged, as a result.
