Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup
Date – 16 June 2025
Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (6,807) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
Since the coup, a total of (29,283) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (22,131) are currently in detention, (10,846) of whom are serving sentences.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
Last week, approximately 200 prisoners, including political prisoners such as Monywa strike leader Wai Moe Naing, were transferred from Monywa Prison in Sagaing Region to Mandalay (Obo) Prison in Mandalay Region. Upon arrival, the transferred inmates were beaten by prison staff and security forces. Several political prisoners were injured, but reportedly, prison authorities did not provide medical treatment.
The junta continues to commit inhumane acts against arbitrarily detained political prisoners and deliberately targets civilians in various towns and villages. The junta has conducted artillery shelling in townships in Bago Region, Kayin State, and Mon State, resulting in civilian casualties. On June 12, an artillery shell fired by junta forces struck a house in Kawt Baw Village, Kawkareik Township, Kayin State, killing six people, including three members of the same family. On June 14, junta forces fired artillery into Tha Ti Pa Htan Ward, Penwegon Town, Kyauktaga Township, Bago Region, killing two civilians, including a child. That same day, an artillery strike on Nwar Yay Chaung Village, in the same township, killed two civilians.
