Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 16 May 2025

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (6,687) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. 

Since the coup, a total of (29,152) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (22,122) are currently in detention, (10,731) of whom are serving sentences. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by AAPP, from April 1 to May 16, 2025, (24) people in total; (10) women and (14) men, were killed by the junta’s artillery strikes across the country, including (4) children under the age of 18. These are numbers that have been verified. Among them, Sagaing and Magway Regions recorded the highest number of fatalities, totaling (6) people each.

On May 14, at approximately 9 p.m., junta forces fired heavy weaponry indiscriminately at Yay Kyi Pin Village, Yinmarbin Township, Sagaing Region. An artillery shell struck a house in the village, killing a Grade-12 student named Yamin Theint (aka Tayote Ma), due to artillery shrapnel.
