Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 8 May 2025

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (6,619) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. 

Since the coup, a total of (29,127) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (22,190) are currently in detention, (10,785) of whom are serving sentences. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by AAPP, from January 1 to May 8, 2025, (23) people in total who died in formal detention facilities; (4) men in interrogation, (3) men in police stations, and (9) women and (7) men in prisons, were killed after being detained by the junta across the country. These identities have been verified.

Myint Myint Than, a political prisoner detained in Mandalay (Obo) Prison, Aungmyaythazan Township, Mandalay Region, was suffering from lung disease. Her condition worsened due to inadequate medical care in the prison. On May 6, 2025, she was transferred to Mandalay General Hospital for medical treatment, and she died on the same day. Junta forces arrested Myint Myint Than on July 27, 2023, and she was sentenced to serve five years in prison under Section 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law, on December 23, 2024.
