According to information gathered by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), there have been a total of (6) individuals who were arrested under political pretenses in March 2025. Moreover, (90) pro-democracy activists and civilians have lost their lives this month.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP and only includes information and data that has been identified. The actual numbers on the ground are likely much higher. AAPP has been working separately to collect and verify the information of around (125) people still under identification, who died within the month.

“On March 28, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Sagaing Region. Many lives were lost. Some buildings in the prisons were also damaged and collapsed, resulting in the death of political prisoners. However, the junta did not even inform the families of political prisoners about their deaths. At the same time, the junta continued to carry out airstrikes, killing innocent civilians. This highlights the fact that the junta has been committing the most heinous acts even when the country is experiencing a major natural disaster. We are grateful about the international community’s support for those affected by the earthquake. Additionally, it is also important for them to help those affected by the junta’s airstrikes, and those who have died or are being tortured by the junta.” Ko Tate Naing, Secretary of AAPP

Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP)⁩

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma), otherwise known as AAPP, is a human rights organization based in Mae Sot, Thailand and Rangoon, Burma. AAPP advocates for the release of all remaining political prisoners in Burma and for the improvement of their quality of life during and after incarceration. AAPP has developed rehabilitation and assistance programs for those political activists who have been released while continuing to document the ongoing imprisonment of political activists in Burma.

As long as political prisoners exist inside Burma, Burma will not be free. They represent the struggle for democracy, human rights, equality and freedom for the people of Burma. This makes the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners an integral part of Burma’s drive for national reconciliation.
