Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 10  February 2025

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (6,268) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

Since the coup, a total of (28,539) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,803) are currently in detention, (10,297) of whom are serving sentences.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

Political prisoners in various prisons across Burma are not only denied their full rights as prisoners but are also subjected to various forms of oppression by prison staff subservient to the junta. In Pathein Prison, Ayeyarwady Region, political prisoners struggle to access basic needs including food and accommodation. They are also suffering from significant health issues, including difficulty walking, due to prolonged consumption of bathing water contaminated with lead, as they are deprived of safe drinking water. Despite these conditions, they are not provided with adequate healthcare, and prison authorities have reportedly been restricting medicine and parcels sent by inmates’ family members.

Additionally, the junta continues to carry out attacks on buildings that are non-military targets, using heavy weaponry and airstrikes on a daily basis. On February 6, parachute bombs were dropped on a monastery in Kan Thar Village, Ngazun Township, Mandalay Region, damaging the monastery and killing a monk. Similarly, on February 7, heavy weapons were fired at villages in Natogyi Township, Mandalay Region, damaging a monastery in Marn Lel Village. On February 8, further artillery shelling burned down several houses in Let Wea-Myin Ni Village in the same township. On February 9, an airstrike was carried out in Ta Gay Laung Village, Hpa-An Township, Kayin State, despite no clashes occurring, destroying a monastery and nearly 20 houses.
