Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 27  January 2025

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (6,208) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. 

Since the coup, a total of (28,370) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,651) are currently in detention, (10,131) of whom are serving sentences. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

Inmates in prisons across the country are being oppressed through the denial of full access to basic necessities such as food and medicine. In Mandalay Prison, Mandalay Region, a diarrhea outbreak escalated in the second week of January due to unsanitary food and drinking water. Approximately 70 inmates, both male and female, were affected. However, prison authorities not only failed to provide adequate medical care but also restricted the import of medicines sent by the inmates’ family members.

Additionally, junta forces, openly committing war crimes; carrying out attacks on non-military targets such as buildings, hospitals, and schools. On January 22, 2025, they conducted an aerial bombing in Nawnghkio Township, Shan State; on January 25, they conducted an aerial bombing in Kyaukme District Hospital in Kyaukme Township, Shan State; and they also conducted an aerial bombing at a school in Sin Gut Village, Myingyan Township, Mandalay Region, on January 26. These attacks killed over 30 civilians, including children, and injured many others.
