Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 20 January 2025
Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (6,190) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
Since the coup, a total of (28,284) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,569) are currently in detention, (10,047) of whom are serving sentences.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
Junta forces have been conducting offensives in various regions and states, including Bago, Magway, and Sagaing Regions, killing civilians, apprehending individuals to use as human shields, and burning down homes on an almost daily basis. On January 16, 2025, junta forces launched an offensive into Si Son Kone Village in Nattalin Township, Bago Region, where they apprehended and killed more than 10 civilians. On January 18, 2025, junta forces raided Kyaung Kone Village and Than Pu Yar Chan Village in Myaing Township, Magway Region, burning down over 30 homes.
Moreover, in Baw Mi Village, Pathein Township, Ayeyarwady Region, where clashes between junta forces and the Arakan Army (AA) have been ongoing, junta forces have continuously conducted airstrikes since January 17, 2025. Nearly all of the more than 200 homes in the village have been burned down.
In addition, in 2025, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) confirmed 65 civilian deaths and 58 additional deaths still under identification due to the junta’s use of superior force to carry out artillery and airstrikes, across various areas of the country.
