Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 9  January 2025

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (6,129) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. 

Since the coup, a total of (28,173) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,466) are currently in detention, (9,931) of whom are serving sentences. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from January 1 to December 31, 2024, (1823) people in total; (1) LGBT, (628) women and (1194) men, were killed by the junta across the country, including (248) children under the age of 18. The identities of these victims have been verified. Among the (1823) deceased, (641) people were killed by the junta’s airstrikes making the highest cause of death, followed by (525) who were killed by the junta’s artillery strikes.

In addition, during the stated period, (1) LGBT, (215) women and (550) men; (766) people in total, have been arrested and are still detained by the junta across the country. Yangon Region records the highest number of arrests, at (208) people. Moreover, during this period, (126) women and (507) men; (633) people in total, have been given prison sentences under specious charges by courts subservient to the junta, across the country. Among them, (48) people have been given to life imprisonment and (6) people have been given the death penalty. Among the (633) sentences, Sagaing Region records the highest number of sentences, at (482) people.
