Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup
Date – 8 January 2025
Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (6,129) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
Since the coup, a total of (28,169) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,475) are currently in detention, (9,939) of whom are serving sentences.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to the data collected by AAPP, from January 1 to December 31, 2024, the junta killed (482) people in total in Sagaing Region; (1) LGBT, (171) women and (310) men, including (55) children under the age of 18. The identities of these victims have been verified. Among the deaths, (140) people were killed after being detained in various ways by the junta, marking the highest number of fatalities, followed by (134) who were killed by the junta’s airstrikes.
On December 28, 2024, while launching an offensive into Budalin Township, Sagaing Region, junta forces apprehended Thaw Zin Phyo from Kin San Village and used him as a human shield before fatally shooting him. On January 1, 2025, his body was found near Tet Hlaing Village with gunshot wounds to the forehead and chest.
