Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 6  January 2025

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (6,120) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

Since the coup, a total of (28,134) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,452) are currently in detention, (9,929) of whom are serving sentences.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

On Independence Day 2025, the junta announced the release of 5,864 prisoners nationwide. The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) has been monitoring the release of political prisoners among those freed. As of 4 p.m. today, information gathered confirmed the release of about (340) political prisoners from (30) prisons and (1) youth training school, of whom 73 have been identified.

In the preceding week, civilians had to flee into jungles and mountains for safety, due to intensifying clashes in several regions and states, including Launglon Township in Tanintharyi Region, Wetlet and Kalewa Townships in Sagaing Region, and Pakokku Township in Magway Region, as well as junta forces launching offensives and setting houses on fire. These displaced individuals faced significant struggles in order to survive, facing an urgent need for basic rations and medicine. Meanwhile, the junta’s violence against civilians continued to escalate, resulting in a growing number of casualties. According to information gathered by the AAPP, 29 identified civilians and 25 others, still being identified, were killed between the last week of December 2024 and this week. Additionally, young men in Yangon and Ayeyarwady Regions were being targeted for forced military conscription. Severe instances of extortion were also reported, with junta forces demanding money in wards and villages, under the pretense of collecting funds for conscripted individuals.
