Since the coup, a total of (28,082) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,485) are currently in detention, (9,944) of whom are serving sentences.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
As countries around the world prepared to celebrate the arrival of the new year in the final week of 2024, junta forces, who unlawfully seized state power, used their superiority over airspace, to launch heavy attacks across various parts of the country—almost as if staging a grotesque display of fireworks to mark the occasion. On December 31, 2024, the final day of the year, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) documented aerial bombings by the junta, that targeted a Hindu temple in Yan Na Gar Village, Zayyawadi Town, Phyu Township, Bago Region; the Sin Internally Displaced Persons’ Camp in Loikaw Township, Kayah State; Thar Kyin Village in Ngazun Township, Mandalay Region; and Yoe Ta Yoke Village in Ponnagyun Township, Rakhine State. These attacks resulted in the death of approximately 20 civilians and left many others injured.
In 2024, the junta’s ruthless actions led to the deaths of (406) people who were killed after being arrested in various parts of Burma. Among these, (12) died in the junta’s official detention centers, including police stations, (15) died in interrogation centers, and (31) died in prisons. However, the actual number of deaths may be higher than the recorded figures.
