Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 23  December 2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (6,070) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

Since the coup, a total of (27,989) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,419) are currently in detention, (9,821) of whom are serving sentences.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

Detained political prisoners across the country are being denied their rights and subjected to various forms of oppression. In Thayarwady Prison, Bago Region, 15 female political prisoners were placed in solitary confinement for nearly two years without any apparent reason, while money was also extorted from them. In addition, authorities in Hinthada Prison, Ayeyarwady Region, have been extorting money from inmates under various pretexts and carrying out other oppressive measures.

Furthermore, almost daily, junta forces have been abducting civilians, using them as human shields and killing them in various ways. As a result, civilians are forced to live under life-threatening conditions, and the number of internally displaced persons fleeing their homes is rapidly increasing. Additionally, on December 16, 2024, junta forces conducted an aerial bombing in Kyauk Hlay Kar Village, Kani Township, Sagaing Region, killing five civilians, including three students, and injuring approximately 10 others.
