Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup
Date – 16 December 2024
Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (6,056) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
Since the coup, a total of (27,888) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,318) are currently in detention, (9,694) of whom are serving sentences.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
In prisons across the country, political inmates continue to face severe oppression. According to information collected last week, political inmates in Shwebo Prison have been prohibited from receiving prison visits for approximately six months, and prison staff have reportedly been exploiting visitation rights to get bribes. Similarly, sick inmates in Myaungmya Prison have not been provided with adequate medical care, and their families have been prohibited from sending them medicine.
Additionally, junta forces launched an offensive in Myingyan Township, Mandalay Region, where the military situation remains intense. This has forced at least 5,000 locals from around 20 villages to flee for safety. As it is currently the winter season, these displaced individuals are facing shortages of basic necessities, including adequate clothing for the cold weather, and are in urgent need of humanitarian aid. On December 10, 2024, which marks International Human Rights Day, junta forces carried out an aerial bombing on Chuncung Village in Hakha Township, Chin State. The attack killed four members of the same family and injured over 10 locals.
