Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup
Date – 2 December 2024
Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (6,000) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
Since the coup, a total of (27,751) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,189) are currently in detention, (9,560) of whom are serving sentences.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
The junta has reportedly been imposing various forms of oppression on political inmates in prisons across the country, including denying them sufficient medical treatment. In some prisons, the importation of medicines has been restricted or even completely banned. Additionally, numerous prison transfers are being conducted. On November 30, around 500 inmates, including political prisoners, from Insein Prison were transferred to prisons elsewhere.
Due to intense clashes between junta forces and the Arakan Army (AA) in Ann Township, Rakhine State, the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) has been increasing. Five IDPs have died in the past week as a result of severe shortages of food and medicine, compounded by harsh weather conditions. Moreover, junta forces, who consistently commit war crimes, are targeting civilians and structures that cannot be classified as military targets. On November 28, junta forces carried out an aerial bombing in several villages in Kyaukkyi Township, Bago Region, destroying religious buildings. On November 29, they launched an offensive in Hpet Taw Yae Village, setting fire to over 10 houses. On November 30, junta forces conducted an aerial bombing in Kyaukme Township, Shan State, killing 10 locals, injuring more than 20, and destroying approximately 10 houses.
