Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 25  November 2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,982) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

Since the coup, a total of (27,715) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,158) are currently in detention, (9,539) of whom are serving sentences.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

Junta forces, who have been carrying out attacks on civilians in various ways, conducted a second aerial bombing on Ban Kok Internally Displaced Persons’ Camp in Pekon Township, Shan State, on November 18, 2024. The attack destroyed a church and over 10 civilian houses, injuring civilians and causing fatalities. In the previous week, junta forces and their allied forces raided and set fire to villages in Kyunhla Township, Sagaing Region, destroying approximately 500 houses. Additionally, junta forces have been arresting civilians on an almost daily basis, with mass arrests taking place in areas such as Monywa, Shwebo, and Pekon Townships.

Whilst junta forces have been openly committing heinous international crimes in public, they are also systematically perpetrating brutal human rights violations in prisons and interrogation centers. These sites of detention are not easily accessible to the public. Even the family members of the elderly State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi–let alone the general public–do not know of her location or the medical conditions she may be suffering from, due to the severe lack of information provided by prison authorities. This act violates provisions of the Prison Manual and intentionally creates conditions that threaten the lives of political prisoners.
