Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup
Date – 14 October 2024
Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,821) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.
Since the coup, a total of (27,545) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (21,046) are currently in detention, (9,503) of whom are serving sentences.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to monitoring conducted by AAPP’s Documentation and Research Department, on October 8 and 9, 2024, over 600 inmates, including political prisoners, from Sittwe Prison in Rakhine State were transferred to other prisons.
Furthermore, the junta forces have consistently committed basic human rights violations targeting civilians. They have banned civilian travel in Rakhine State and restricted the import of essential goods, such as food and medicine. Additionally, they have carried out more airstrikes in townships across Rakhine State. Similarly, they have launched offensives into civilian areas, conducting arbitrary arrests and killings. As a result, last week, around 30 locals were arrested in Myit Chay Town, Magway Region, and several civilians were killed during a raid in Budalin Town, Sagaing Region.
