Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 24 September  2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,694) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. 

Since the coup, a total of (27,443) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (20,953) are currently in detention, (9,457) of whom are serving sentences. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from January 1 to September 24, 2024,  a total of (579) people; (165) women, (413) men and (1) transgender, were arrested in relation to the Spring Revolution by the junta across the country. Among the (579) arrests, (5) people were re-arrested more than once; (1) person was re-arrested twice and (4) people were re-arrested one time. 

There have been continuous anti-junta activities in Yangon Region. On September 19, 2024, junta forces arrested Zaw Linn Htut (aka Phoe Thar), co-founder of the All Burma Students’ Union and freelance photojournalist; who was involved in such activities. Zaw Linn Htut (aka Phoe Thar) was first arrested on December 19, 2021, while on his way to a protest. On March 31, 2022, he was sentenced to serve 3 years in prison with hard labor, and was released from Insein Prison on May 3, 2023. This marked his arrest for the second time.
